well, jd gloom was nice
enough to invite me up to his place for a long weekend, to
help out with the tournament he and frank set up. i had a
really good time, and here is my report! we will start off
with the not tournament stuff....it was a fairly decent bus
ride, and really really nice to see gloom again, and get to
meet his family. i got in thursday at around ten, so there
wasn't much doing that night except settling in and just
hanging out. friday we spent building decks, playtesting,
more hanging out, planning for the tournament, and a really
good dinner at the sushi place. saturday brought more
hanging out, playtesting, and a trip to the movies with
nova. we went to see 'the transporter.' it was really,
really good! we decided on friday that having some sort of
identifier for staff was a good idea....so we bought some
lanyards as well. then we went back, had reaaaalllly good
barbeque ribs, and got to work on the judge id's and some
wristbands for the event. i'd brought my ibook of course, so
i fired up photoshop and we soon had some acceptable
designs. meanwhile, nova and kish showed up. so i got to
meet kish. we soon realized that printing from gloom's
computer wasn't going to work, so his dad drove us to
kinko's. there's always an underlying kinko's motif in these
tournament reports, isn't there? and with good reason, the
stuff printed out beautifully. here you can see scans of the
tag and wristbands. nice huh? then we went back, assembled
the tags, made sure we had everything we needed, i reviewed
some dci rulings and so forth AGAIN, and then we finally
went to bed. i'm really wishing i had some more of those
ribs right now. that was the best barbeque i've had in
ages.... i'm just going to sit here and think about the
barbeque for a few more minutes...you can read on ahead,
tho....[stares dreamily off into space] |

all judges wore one of these laminated around their necks, on a
lanyard....

these were stapled around the wrists of the competitors, once they'd
paid and registered.

well, we didn't get moving
quite as quickly as we ought to have done. we were a bit
late picking up nova. we arrived at the movie theater, the
tournament venue, within the alloted time however. oh--the
tournament was being held at a movie theater, to coincide
with the opening of the new movie. unfortunately, since the
movie was a limited release, the theater didn't find out
they were not receiving the movie until a day or so before
the tournament. ah well... frank and his kids were already
there, as were chris and dooley. chris and frank and jake
(frank's son) of course i'd met in seattle and it was really
nice to see them again. i've met dooley on aim, and liked
getting to meet him in person. the tables were set up,
covered with paper and numbered. gloom and i showed everyone
the judge's lanyards and the wristbands, and we got the
computer set up and everything ready to go. with more than
an hour to go til registration opened, players were already
arriving, hanging around the outside of the theater. both
chris and dooley wanted to have a game, so i got out my
brand new never played hope-to-goodness-it-works modified
deck out and sat down to play dooley. i was playing a new
idea i'd had, expedition vileplume with murkrow and
expedition arbok. dooley had an advantage, with a deck
revolving around discovery espeon. (yup....my poison isnt
going to do much against a deck of all free retreaters....)
but thanks to strength charm and murkrow's psy resistance, i
was able to both stay alive and pick enough babies off of
dooley's bench to keep ahead in prizes. it was a long game,
nearly an hour, and ended when i mean looked a promo mew and
let poison and feint attack finish it off. it was a really
good game. it was nearly time to open registration, so i
declined a game against chris or jake and we all hurried to
get ready. nova and gloom took the cash and filled out the
registration book, i entered players' dci numbers and names
into reporter and sent them over for their wristbands.
registration went really smoothly, and with a tournament cap
of 48, we registered 36 players. not bad! i'd say the
majority were 15+, and some had traveled over an hour to get
to the tournament. let's take a little photo break, and look
at pics of the setup and players arriving, shall we?
[contemplates going to the grocery store to buy some
ribs...] |

frank was the tournament operator, and i was head judge. gloom was originally going to act as head judge, but he was nice and stepped aside to let me do it, to get the last point i needed for my master professorship. the tournament started about on time, pairings went up and the first round began. this was an unlimited tournament, and game play went pretty quickly. with six judges for 36 players, rulings questions etc. were handled really smoothly. we saw a lot of sneasel, a lot of slowking, and a lot of rocket zapdos...not a lot of expedition, however. play for the most part went really well, there were very few disruptions and most of the players knew the game quite well. |

everyone waits to see the final standings......
