Issue #41e - I Love NY! (part 1)

well, not all promos seem to be handed out to everyone who asks, some are a lot harder to obtain, like the two promo cards handed out at the grand opening of the pokemon center in new york. now these cards were ONLY available there and there are NO plans to rerelease them to a wider audience...

[DISCLAIMER] it was NOT the discression of wizards of the coast to make these promo cards insanly hard to obtain, in fact many people at wizards didn't even KNOW about these cards until they were released. when i asked mtm about lucky stadium before it was widly known about, he admitted that he hadn't seen it before.

...so lets take a look at the two hard to get promos.... first pokemon center and then lucky stadium.

Pokemon Center:
Remove all damage counters from
all of your pokemon with
damage counters on them,
then discard all energy cards attached
to those pokemon.

well pokemon center promo is exactly the same as the base set one, but it has a way cooler picture.

obviously the goal of it it to cure your pokemon of damage, but at the cost of removing all energy... might be a good trade off, depends on the circumstances tho of course.

pokemon center really saw its hayday back when damage swap decks were big. you could easily swap out all the damage to unscathed pokemon with no energy and wipe it all away. this also worked in energy trans decks.

but now we all know that i support modified and try to gear the analyst towards that, right?

so then, how can one use pokemon center in modified?

the answer is the self powering cards that are out there. with more and more attacks costing 3 or 4 energy to pull off, you can't afford to clear the damage and then wait 4 turns to attack... what you need are cheap attackers, or self powering cards.

fire uses cards like holo entei (with howl) the typhlosion (with fire recharge) and all stoke attacks, one can use pokemon center and then build up again next turn fairly fast.

electric has the infamous rocket's zapdos, and the new revelation ampharos. personally i think that ampharos and pokemon center work GREAT together...

in the psychic line, you have mp mewtwo still, and if you are playing the traditional psychic decks that are out there, you'll really only have damage/energy on sabrina's alakazam anyway, so powering up isn't too hard.

grass, water, fighting, and colorless don't really have cards that can power themselves back up, but they also tend to have attacks that only use one energy as well, so that you can use center, and still come back to attack that turn.

...and don't forget about recycle energy. its a free play! ;)

the BIG types to avoid with pokemon center are... DARK AND STEEL. i mean... do you REALLY want to just toss out 2 or 3 special energy cards for the sake of healing a few damage? in darka nd steel decks you're better off to use moomoo milk, berries and so forth to keep that precious energy attached.

we'll be back again with number 41b... lucky stadium.

[looks at his logs...]

hmm... and after that we will also review and compair the dogs... holo to non holo counterparts... as well as looking at some of the cards that have two version with revelation like ho-oh, lugia, ampharos, houndoom, and celebi.
