Hackman's Ech's Analyst

Issue #38e - Somewhere, over the Rainbow

hey!

i remembered where they kept the analyst files... so here i am! mwahahahahaha...

anyway, hack has had to contend with that thing called 'real life' as well as prepping for college and lack of internet access... poor hack.

anyway, while he's absent i think i'll do a few analysts on the new promos coming out... and maybe on some revelation cards as well.

today we have a holo turned rare turned holo from every pack turned promo.

yup! we're talking about non other than that lovely looking rainbow energy! its now classified as a promo so i has special protection under the modified format rules should wizards ever choose to <ahem> modify modified.

Rainbow Energy: Special Energy Card
Attach Rainbow Energy to 1 of your Pokémon. While in play,
Rainbow Energy provides every type of basic Energy but
provides only 1 Energy at a time. (It never counts as a basic
Energy card.)
When you attack this card from your hand to 1
of your Pokémon, it does 10 damage to that Pokémon.
(Don't apply Weakness and Resistance)

alrighty.... on with analyzing this sucker.

first off to avoid any questions at then end... Yes, Rainbow Energy CAN (and will) be used to provide Darkness and Metal Energy. NO it does NOT give it the Darkness and Metal 'edge'. (adding or preventing damage) ...got it? Great!

now then of course the most COMMON use for Rainbow Energy is when you are running Dark or Steel Decks. All of a sudden you've gone from having 4 key energies to having 8 of the suckers. sure... four of them are just PRETENDING to be dark or steel, but still... when you are in need, a mock one is better than non at all!

another key use is when you are running multi color decks... like 3 or 4. you really don't see this anymore tho. its all one and very very rarely two. i remember the days of the 'classic' haymaker with hitmonchan, sychter, electabuzz and magmar. throw in a couple rainbow energies and this is set to go turn one pretty near.

now then... another card that is good for rainbow, IN THEORY, is poor little SI mew. attach a psychic and a rainbow and now you're pumping out 20 a turn to whomever you want. ...eh.. there is a drawback however. i mean mew only has 30hp... you add on a rainbow and POW! it's down to 20 health... even a dunsparce could kill it then. (pathetic, no?) my suggestion would be to use the more formidable (and cuter) sabrina's alakzam. use psylink and you get all the rainbow waving goodness without the nasty side effects! (like dunsparce ko's)

....there is of course a drawback to the rainbow. that is the 10 damage that it puts on your pokemon. for some of the bigger guys it isn't THAT much a problem, but for the poor SI mews and abras, it could pose quite a threat... thus you definatly want to think before using it.

BUT!

there is an advantage to that 10 damage. [everyone looks at ech]

i was playing a game once in which my s. kadabra with 60 damage was meanlooked and then my bench was taking a royal pounding. i had no gust/warp points, so i was damn near helpless... untill i pulled that lovely rainbow energy. just slap it on kadabra and... well... sadly for kadabra it died in the line of duty, but it also enabled me to get rid of the trap i was in and come back and get rid of the krow.

another way to use that damage to your advantage is by use of the berries. if you have 10 or 30 damage on you and a berry you're going to have to wait until your opponent attacks you... unfortunatly their next attack will KILL YOU!!!!! ...what to do... what do do... again, damage yourself in order to get that much needed berry to activate.

well, i'm sure i've taken up enough of your time for one day.... perhaps we'll return tomorrow with one of the three new trainer promos... or maybe if someone emails me some ideas i could do that too...
